Judith Margaret Lamle
Judith Margaret Lamle (1947 – 2024) was born on 14th January 1947 to Gwen and Ken Roebuck, the eldest sister to Peter and Sue. Growing up in Kitchenroyd, Judith went to Scissett Church of England and Penistone Grammar schools and then to Huddersfield School of Art followed by Leeds College of Art and Bretton College.
Judith met Peter Lamle when she was seventeen and they were married on 7th September 1968. After leaving her job teaching art in Wakefield, Judith and Peter settled in Ormsby-St-Margaret, Norfolk, where Judith taught at The Hospital School and was active in the Labour Party. After Sophie was born, Judith and Peter returned to Yorkshire, teaching at Scissett Middle School and as a supply teacher at Kirkburton Middle School.
Judith had an art exhibition at the Hahn Gallery in Albemarle Street, London before opening art galleries with Peter in Scissett and Denby Dale.
Taught to play the piano as a youngster, music was important throughout Judith’s life. At home she played duets, sang or accompanied family and friends. As a young girl she joined the Scissett Amateur Operatic Society and Joe Hirst’s Concert Party. Later she was a soprano in the Denby Dale Ladies’ Choir and the Huddersfield Gilbert and Sullivan Society performing at Lawrence Batley Theatre.
Nature was an important part of Judith’s life, inspiring her art and love of walking in the countryside. She was an excellent cook and her other interests included cats and friends she made from her work and travels. She and Peter visited Germany many times to visit his relatives and Switzerland, after Sophie with her partner Tamer had settled there. Judith continued to visit Switzerland, after becoming a grandma to Lily until her health deteriorated when Judith and Peter moved into Scissett Mount Care Home, Huddersfield.
