David Lindores Renwick

David Lindores Renwick (1937 –  2024) was born in Cambridge to Joy (née Bonong ) and John, a police officer, and had a younger brother Stuart. The family had moved to Cambridge from the Scottish border town of Peebles.

Joy and John were both musicians and the family often played together in a Cambridge operatic society.

When David was about nine years old his father left home and had a second family, with whom David made contact years later.

After Milton Road primary school David attended Chesterton Boys School and became Head Boy.

His National Service was with the RAF, after which he started work as a draughtsman – later working on maps − for the County Planning and County Record offices in Cambridge where he met Ann, and they married in July 1959 before moving to Taunton, Somerset where David began a Social Work course.

They had two children, Tracey and Brendon. After following David’s jobs to Weston-Super-Mare, then Newark, the family finally settled in Carlisle in 1972. When he left Social work he became a driving instructor and a humanist funeral celebrant. He also donated his brain to Newcastle University’s dementia research programme.

A keen scout in his youth, he also swam, rowed in an ‘eight’ and later learned sub-aqua diving and potholing. He loved fell walking and bird watching. David also continued to play music and was a member of a dance band based in Bassenthwaite.
